What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?

What does an answer engine do?
An answer engine replies to a question with a written answer instead of a list of links. ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews all read web pages, pick the ones that answer best, and summarize them, often naming businesses and linking to the pages they used.
That changes what it means to be found. A homeowner who asks "who should I call about a leaking roof in Salt Lake City" may never see a page of ten blue links. They see three or four names in a paragraph. If your business isn't one of them, the search is over before it started.
Each engine retrieves pages differently. OpenAI documents a crawler for ChatGPT search called OAI-SearchBot, separate from GPTBot, which collects training data. Perplexity uses PerplexityBot. Google AI Overviews draw on pages already in Google's search index. The common thread: an engine can only cite what it can fetch, read and trust.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO earns a position in a list of results; AEO earns a mention inside the answer. They share foundations (crawlable pages, helpful content, a clear site), but AEO rewards pages that answer one question directly, back it with facts, and are structured so a model can quote them.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank on a results page | Be named and linked inside the answer |
| Unit of success | A position (#1–#10) | A mention or citation in one answer |
| What wins | Relevance, links, page experience | Direct answers, verifiable facts, structure |
| Where you check | Search Console, rank trackers | The answers themselves, asked every day |
| Typical content | Pages built around keywords | Pages built around one real question |
How do AI engines decide which businesses to name?
They favour pages that answer the exact question asked, state checkable facts, and come from sources other pages and data back up. In practice that means a clear answer near the top, specific numbers, structured data that identifies the business, and consistent details everywhere the business appears.
- A direct answer in the first lines of the page, not after an introduction.
- Headings phrased as the questions people ask.
- Specific, verifiable facts: prices, ranges, dates, licences, locations.
- Structured data (schema.org) that says who the business is and what it offers.
- The same name, phone number and location on every page and profile.
What does AEO work involve?
Finding the questions your customers ask AI, measuring who gets named today, then publishing the best answer to each question on your own site, with the structure engines need to read it. Results are tracked by asking the same questions every day and recording who is named.
In our own program, each article targets one tracked question. The data showed why: in August 2026, the three posts titled on a tracked question were cited by AI answers within 3 to 14 days, while ten posts written from a generic topic list, with the same quality checks and schema, earned no citations at all.
How do you measure AEO?
By asking the questions your customers ask, across each engine, on a schedule, and recording four things: whether you're named, whether you're linked, your position in the answer, and which competitors appear instead. One check proves little; daily checks over weeks show the trend.
Frequently asked questions
Mostly. Generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) describe the same goal: being cited by AI-generated answers. AEO is the more common term for business owners; GEO is common in research.
No. AI engines still read web pages, and Google AI Overviews draw on Google's search index, so crawlable, well-built pages remain the foundation. AEO adds answer-first writing, structure and answer tracking on top.
For most local businesses: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity. Which one sends you customers depends on your market, which is why tracking each engine separately matters.
Pages written to answer a tracked question can be cited within days; in our data, within 3 to 14 days. Broad visibility across many questions builds over months of consistent publishing.
It helps engines identify your business and understand your content. Organization, Service, FAQ and Article markup are the usual starting points, and the markup must match what's visible on the page.
Only partly. If you block the crawlers that power AI search, such as OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, those engines can't read your pages to cite them. Blocking training crawlers like GPTBot is a separate choice.
A proposed plain-text file at the root of a site that summarizes it for language models, suggested in 2024. It's cheap to add, but no major engine has confirmed it as a ranking or citation signal yet.
