How do you get your business cited by ChatGPT?

Can ChatGPT read your website?

Only if OAI-SearchBot is allowed in. OpenAI uses that crawler to find pages for ChatGPT search; GPTBot is a separate crawler for model training. If robots.txt or a firewall blocks OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT search can't fetch your pages to cite them.

Check robots.txt for any rule that disallows OAI-SearchBot or all bots, and ask your host whether a firewall challenges unknown crawlers. Many sites block AI crawlers by default without the owner knowing.

What kind of page does ChatGPT cite?

A page that answers one specific question directly, near the top, with facts it can check. Long pages that cover everything loosely are quoted less than focused pages whose first lines are the answer.

What gets quoted, and what doesn't
Gets citedGets passed over
Title is the customer's questionTitle is a slogan or a vague topic
Answer in the first two sentencesAnswer after a long introduction
Specific numbers, prices, dates, licencesGeneral claims with nothing to check
Headings phrased as questionsHeadings that are single words
Schema that matches the visible pageNo structured data, or markup that disagrees

What are the steps to get cited?

Open the door for the crawler, choose the questions, publish one answer-first page per question, structure it, keep your details consistent, then track the answers. Each step is small; skipping any one of them is usually why a business isn't named.

  1. Allow OAI-SearchBot (and other AI search crawlers) in robots.txt and your firewall.
  2. List the questions customers ask before they hire you, in their words.
  3. Publish one page per question, titled with the question, answered in the first two sentences.
  4. Add a table or list of facts, and an FAQ that matches FAQPage schema.
  5. Add Organization and Service schema; keep name, phone and address identical everywhere.
  6. Ask ChatGPT each question regularly and record whether you're named and linked.

How fast can it work?

Faster than most people expect for a well-targeted page. In our August 2026 data, posts titled on a tracked question were cited by AI answers within 3 to 14 days. Posts written around generic topics, with the same checks and markup, earned no citations in the same period.

How do you know if ChatGPT cites you?

Ask it. Run your tracked questions in ChatGPT with search on, on a schedule, and record whether your business is named, whether your site is linked, and who is named instead. One check is noise; daily checks over weeks show the real trend.

Frequently asked questions

  • No. Citations in ChatGPT search answers aren't sold; they come from pages the search crawler can read and judges useful.

  • GPTBot collects content that may be used to train models. OAI-SearchBot finds pages for ChatGPT search results and citations. You can allow one and block the other.

  • It helps engines identify your business and parse your page. Keep it accurate and matching what's visible.

  • For people, in the form a model can quote: the direct answer first, then the detail. Pages that serve readers well are the ones engines quote.

  • Only if each page answers a real question. Our data shows targeted pages earning citations while generic ones earn none.

  • ChatGPT search shows sources for its answers. Being named and being linked are tracked separately, and both can improve.

  • Yes. The same answer-first pages and structure work across engines, though each has its own crawler (PerplexityBot for Perplexity) and its own preferences.
