AEO vs SEO: what's the difference?

What is the main difference between AEO and SEO?

The unit of success. SEO counts positions on a results page; AEO counts mentions inside an answer. A page can rank well and still never be quoted, because answer engines pick the source that answers the question most directly and most verifiably.

Do AEO and SEO conflict?

No. Almost everything that helps AEO also helps SEO: fast, crawlable pages, clear headings, real expertise and structured data. The difference is emphasis. AEO pushes the answer to the top of the page and measures success in the answers themselves.

Which should a local business start with?

Make sure the SEO basics are sound, then put new effort into AEO. A site that search engines can't crawl won't be cited either; a site that's crawlable but never answers the questions customers ask AI will rank and still be left out of the answer.

  1. Check that AI search crawlers can reach your site (robots.txt and firewall rules).
  2. Make your name, phone number and location identical everywhere.
  3. List the questions customers ask before they hire you.
  4. Publish one page per question, with the answer in the first two sentences.
  5. Ask the engines those questions every day and record who they name.

How do the results differ?

AEO results can arrive fast for a single question. In our program's August 2026 data, the three posts titled on a tracked question were cited within 3 to 14 days, while ten similar posts not aimed at tracked questions earned none. SEO gains on competitive terms usually take longer to show.

Frequently asked questions

  • Google says pages need to be indexed and eligible for Search to appear in AI features; there's no separate submission. Good SEO is the entry ticket.

  • Enough to cover how customers really search: we track 30 per client, across four engines, daily.

  • Yes. Engines quote the clearest answer, not the biggest company. A focused local business that answers its customers' exact questions can be named ahead of national brands.
